Update for v1.4.4+: Set launch option "-skipmovies", as explained here:. If you have Steam Cloud Sync enabled (default), you need to do this while the game is running! If present, delete gameState.save from the savegame folder located at "C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Daedalic Entertainment GmbH\Shadow Tactics Blades of the Shogun\user\gameState_00\" (replace USER with your user account). 
Reinstalling the game or verifying integrity of game cache. Updating Windows (this might fix some DirectX related problems). 
Most of the issues related to a black screen on first startup should be fixed by one of the following steps:
